5 Rubbish Monsters
While searching online for info about our Thanksgiving day Blood Feast post, I came across this amusing clip. Narration by a bemused Englishman makes any bad movie better!

Vacarro backs up the intense (and sublimely ridiculous) Faye Dunaway in 1984’s super-hero misfire Supergirl.

TCM is airing some great stuff in the next few days. Set your various recording devices (VCR, DVR, Tivo or whatever) for Friday night (3/7) because the fun begins with one of our all-time favorites, the Suzanne Pleshette bad-girl classic A Rage to Live (1965). The evening continues with the spaghetti westerns of director Segio Leone, but be sure to catch his foray into the historical epic with The Colossus of Rhodes (1961) which inexplicably stars Rory Calhoun !?! Later, as part of their TCM Underground series, they’re airing two of Ray Dennis Steckler’s ultra low-budget flicks, The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? (1964) and Rat Pfink a Boo Boo (1966). In the wee hours of Monday morning (3/10), catch the airing of such oddball sci-fi classics as X From Outer Space (1967) Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) and the TCM sci-fi documentary Watch the Skies. The theme for Tuesday evening (3/11) is ‘night at the nuthouse’. Be sure not to miss The Cobweb (1955) Lilith (1964) The Caretakers (1963) or Maniac (1963).
Bad Girls, Colossus of Rhodes, Cult Camp Classic, Joan Crawford, Turner Classic Movies (TCM), What We're Watching, camp, cult, sci-fi
Today is Zsa Zsa Gabor’s birthday. In homage I suggest viewing the Queen of Outer Space (1958). Warners finally released this legendary sci-fi cheese-fest on DVD last year as part of their Cult Camp Classic series. It’s wild, it’s wacky and positively reeks of low-budget 1950’s goodness.
Turner Classic Movies will be running several notable cult favorites during the month of October. The Italian sci-fi fave Wild, Wild Planet (1965) airs on Oct. 12th and Michael Powell’s fantasy A Matter of Life and Death (1946) airs on the 21st. There’s also Scream of Fear (1961) on the 19th and The Werewolf (1957) on Halloween. Check out the TCM website for more information.
Producer/director William Castle fancied himself a low-budget master of suspense in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock. Homicidal (1961) can easily be described as his take on Psycho (1960). Joan Marshall (aka Jean Arless) is great as the “psycho” Emily, who torments Helga the wheelchair-bound invalid and has an oddly close relationship with Warren, who recently spent some time in Denmark. It’s all as ghoulish and camp as you’d expect from Castle, who inserts a “Fright Break” before the final twist is revealed. Audiences in 1961 may have been surprised by the final shocking revelation, but despite Marshall’s convincing performance, viewers today are likley to figure things out right away.

The Giant Claw finally arrives on DVD Oct. 16th as part of the Sam Katzman: Icons of Horror Collection
A few years before Chuck Heston took to the skies with Karen Black in Airport ‘75, he piloted a terrorized 707 in Skyjacked (1972). Recently released as part of the “Terrorized Travelers” cult movie box set from Warners, Skyjacked hits all the expected points of an Airport-style disaster movie. While there are certainly campy moments (James Brolin as the sweaty, googly-eyed Nam veteran hijacker, Mariette Hartely giving birth 20,000 ft. over Moscow) the tone remains relatively serious, anchored by the performance of the heroic square-jawed no-nonsense Heston. The cast also includes Yvette Mimieux, Leslie Uggams, Jeanne Crain and Walter Pidgeon.
