Turner Classic Movies (TCM), trailer

Happy Birthday Richard Fleischer 1916 – 2006

December 8th, 2008

Fleischer is best remembered for directing such genre classics as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Fantastic Voyage (1966) and Soylent Green (1974). Lovers of truly awful cinema know that he was also at the helm of the southern trash epic Mandingo (1975), the Neil Diamond remake of The Jazz Singer (1980) and the joyfully derivative Amityville 3-D (1983). Below is the trailer for Fleischer’s Conan-inspired Red Sonja (1985), in which Arnold Schwarzenegger’s acting is positively Oscar worthy compared to Brigitte Nielsen’s wooden line-readings.

Happy Birthday Gloria Grahame 1923 – 1981

November 28th, 2008

It’s criminal that the nut-house melodrama The Cobweb (1955) isn’t available on DVD. In it, Grahame plays the wife of loony-bin doctor Richard Widmark who has given the okay for the patients to design new drapes for the library. Grahame has her own ideas about the curtains, leading to an all-star battle about the drapes! Brilliant!

Happy Birthday Hope Lange 1933 – 2003

November 28th, 2008

Two of our absolute favorite Lange performances are from the small-town pot-boiler Peyton Place (1957) and the “girls in the big city” classic The Best of Everything (1959).

Happy Thanksgiving

November 27th, 2008

Blood Freak (1972) Warning: A movie about a murderous, drug-addicted, monster turkey may sound like fun… well, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
