A special birthday shout-out to the late great cult film director William Girdler. Be sure to check out our in-depth reviews of his classics, Abby (1974) and Grizzly(1976). Below are the trailers for both Abby and Grizzly, as well as Sheba Baby (1975) and one of CCT’s all-time bad movie favorites The Manitou (1978).
Today is Dino De Laurentiis’ birthday. De Laurentiis has produced a few good movies in his day(he was honored with the Thalberg Award at the 2001 Academy Awards) but his bad movies far out-weigh the good ones. In their 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards Harry and Michael Medved aptly dubbed him “Dino De Horrendous”. His passion for big stars and big budgets resulted in some of the most enjoyably awful films of the 70’s and 80’s. Below are the trailers for Orca (1977) Flash Gordon(1980) and his legendary remake of King Kong(1976).
We love Susan George! In honor of her birthday (as if we ever need an excuse to post crazy clips on CCT) here are the trailers for The House Where Evil Dwells (1982) Fright (1971) the deadly dull shark epic Tintorera (1977) and the southern-fried melodrama Mandingo (1975).
Today would’ve been Natalie Wood’s 70th birthday. Be sure to check out the full CCT reviews of her co-starring roles in The Star(1952) and Meteor (1979). Below is the trailer for one of our favorite Wood performances, Inside Daisy Clover (1965). In this Hollywood expose, Wood plays the title character, a teenage tomboy who is transformed into America’s cinematic sweetheart. Sadly, the video is out of print (but not impossible to find) and it is not yet available on DVD, though the film occasionally plays on cable (thank God for TCM).
What happens when you cross the sword and sorcery of Conan the Barbarian (1982) with the sci-fi cheese of Flash Gordon (1980)? You get the high camp adventures of a barbarian named Yor the Hunter From the Future (1983). Directed by Italian genre mainstay Antonio Marghetti (aka Anthony Dawson) and shot entirely in Turkey, Yor is a weird, wild and unintentionally silly ride that is sure to induce laughter in even the most jaded cinephile. Read review…
Special Programing Note: Yor is not yet available on DVD, but thanks to the wonder of YouTube, we’ll be posting the film in it’s entirety as part of our ongoing CCT Theatre series. Check back tomorrow for the first part of Yor the Hunter From the Future!
Could there possibly be anything better than the vehicular insanity of 1977’s The Car? I think not. James Brolin (complete with 70’s porn stache) plays the sheriff of a southwestern town that’s being terrorized by a car from hell. No, the driver isn’t a manic. No, the car isn’t possessed. It’s literally a customized Lincoln from hell that can stop killing 70’s era character actors. Borrowing liberally from Jaws (1975) and The Exorcist (1973), The Car is a laugh riot from start to finish. Even the moments that are car-free are hilarious thanks to the screen-time spent on the melodramatic lives of the small towns citizens.
